"He is a velvet rock. He is a very personable and competent professional. He has made a difference in every organization in which he has worked." Dr. Jean Sorci, Green Tree Solutions, Phoenix, AZ

Dear Colleague,

The demand for productivity and accountability from our schools is, perhaps, greater today than at any other time in our nation's history. The national and global conditions make it essential that our schools meet this challenge. As a response to this demand, an abundance of school reform initiatives have been proposed. Sadly, these reforms appear to have produced little significant and/or lasting change.

One of the shortcomings of many of the reforms is that they have been narrow in scope. They focused only on curriculum or only on instruction or only on assessment. They simply did not look at the school as a complicated whole. The Continuous Improvement System (CIS) approaches the school as a complex entity comprised of multiple interrelated components. This system begins with the school's faculty making a commitment to raise student achievement and proceeds through every aspect of the teaching-learning process. When implemented with fidelity, the CIS has consistently produced high quality instruction and elevated the level of student achievement.

My colleague, Judy Ness, and I have set forth the details of the Continuous Improvement System in Student Success: How to Make it Happen. The book contains all of the plans and documents that are necessary for the successful implementation of the CIS.

Viking Solutions can also provide training in a comprehensive set of leadership skills designed to assist school leaders to effectively implement the CIS. This includes coaching in the correlates of effective schools, systems theory, understanding basic human needs, creating a motivating environment in the workplace and methods to assist people to manage change.

I am confident that the educational community can meet the challenges that are before us and look forward to working with you to enhance the educational opportunities that we offer to students.
